Letenský Montmartre

After the Academy building was completed (1903), blocks of apartment houses began to appear around it, many with studios in their attics or courtyards. This part of Letná earned nicknames such as “Letenský Montmartre” or “the Letná republic of artists”. Artists used to meet in the popular Belvedere café, the U Sojků restaurant and other venues…

The artist Kateřina Ebelová revived the name Letenský Montmartre with her projects in Jana Zajíce Street 7. In 1996 she founded Gallery Scarabeus with its courtyard garden and later added the Coffee Museum Alchymista. In 1998 the project grew to include the café and patisserie Alchymista with a ceiling painting by Jan Kristofori – Alchemy – and a coffee roastery outside Prague. The family café and patisserie Alchymista is open daily from 1 pm to 7.30 pm.
